Teaching Philosopy

What is the purpose of schooling?

I believe the purpose of public education is to train young people to take on the various roles of society. And regardless of the field they decide to pursue, they will obtain that basic knowledge to expound upon and apply to their areas of interests.

What is the role of the student?

The student takes on many roles in the classroom, probably just as many as the teacher! The first and foremost important role is that of a "learner." Students should come to class with the expectancy to learn more than anything else. The second role is that of a "researcher." Through the process of learning students may form questions that they wish to learn more about or answer.  As students develop throughout their academic career they should gradually become more independent in their studies.

What do I teach?

Since my profession is art education, I strive to teach children basic concepts through two and three dimensional artmaking. I also feel that technology plays a huge role in today's younger generation and that references to technology in the art classroom are most definitely essential connections to make.

What is my role as an educator?

I believe the teacher's role in the classroom varies on a daily basis. Along with instructing students, teacher's should serve as guides in which they provide support and suggestions but ultimately let their students choose their own paths. I believe that teachers can serve as mentors, role models, and so much more.

Why do I teach?

I teach because I love to see students grow! There is nothing more exciting than seeing a child's face light up when he or she has "clicked" with a certain concept or mastered a particular skill. Most importantly, not only do I believe that students have something to learn from teachers, but we also have something to learn from them! The benefits of a teacher-student relationship are mutual.
